Gjergj Frasheri is an archaeologist, architectural and building historian, art historian and publicist. He studied civil engineering at the University of Tirana and completed his studies with a focus on architectural history (1966-1973). He graduated university and postgraduate studies in archaeology, history and restoration of historical sites and religious architecture at the Universities of Tirana and Rome and at the ICCROM in Rome.
One of his early architectural history and archaeological studies (1970/71) „Kalaja e Ndroqit“ (The fortress of Ndroq) was published in 1972 (Monumentet, Tirana, 1972). Since 1973 Frasheri has worked as archaeologist, architectural historian and restorer at the Institute of Cultural Monuments of Albania. From 1990 till 1992 he researched and taught as Fellow of the German Foundation “Alexander-von- Humboldt-Stiftung” at the Institute of History and Culture of the Middle East and Turkology, Munich University and at the Department of Asian and Islamic Art History, Bonn University.
In his more than 40-year professional career, Frasheri carried out a large number of major archaeological and architectural research projects and restoration projects in antique and medieval cities and fortifications in southern and central Europe. Furthermore, he conducted extensive architectural history research in areas of the former Ottoman Empire, particularly in the Balkans, in Turkey and in other regions of the Middle East.
From 2001 till 2011 he headed with his company „Stadt- und Landschaftsarchäologie“ (SuLA), based in Cologne, Berlin, Aachen, Venice and Tirana, a large number of archaeological projects, including some of the major excavations in historic city centres in Germany. Since 2009 he works mainly at excavation and restoration projects in Albania, for example at the historic city centre of Durres.
Gjergj Frasheri is author of numerous publications in the field of archaeology, architectural history, restoration of historical sites, as well as art and literary history in different European countries.
